Today ends my first week back at work, filled with meetings, meetings, and... more meetings. On Monday, the kiddos arrive! So I thought it would be a perfect time to share my favorite quote with you. It also sums up quite nicely my personal philosophy of education. And Mr. Rogers said it! Do you remember Mr. Rogers? With the cardigans and King Friday? Good times....
So here it is:
"It's easy to convince people that children need to learn the alphabet and numbers. How do we help people to realize that what matters is how a person's inner life finally puts together the alphabet and numbers of his outer life?
What really matters is whether he uses the alphabet for the declaration of war or the description of a sunrise, and his numbers for the final count in Buchenwald or for the specifics of a new bridge"
Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers)
Just beautiful! I should really frame it and put it on my desk at work -- for a little encouragement when I'm feeling too tired to be a good teacher...
I found some lovely prints on Etsy to go along with the theme of the quote:
that is such a beauitiful quote. i love it. i think i will share it with my teacher friends :D
ReplyDelete& i love allll of these letter/number prints! i think i just might buy some for freidns who are expecting babies soon! thanks for sharing :D
What a perfect quote for raising children. Thank you for the inspiration- today, I definitely need it!
ReplyDeleteOh I dearly love Mr. Rogers and always watched it with my kids. I was so sad when he died...
ReplyDeleteThanks, too, for your comment on my fox post -- he was pretty close; it was amazing!
Great quote, although we're more of a Sesame Street family. Hope your first day back goes well.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quote and lovely items!
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my blog :-)
I saw such pretty set of numbers posters at a local nature center, they looked like they were off etsy and I meant to look them up. Seeing the prints you chose reminded me to look! And that quote puts it perfectly. It's what they do with what they learn that counts. I'd say print it in some pretty font, add a coloful background and frame it. :)
ReplyDeleteso thrilled you chose to feature my prints, and that you introduced me to your lovely blog. thank you!
