I used to sleep in until the very last possible moment before getting up and getting ready for work. I would inhale my breakfast, make my tea and drink it on the go. My bedtimes would vary but I would usually be tired during the day.
Then one day about four or five years ago, Max convinced me to try going to bed at the same time (within an hour) and waking up at the same time (exactly) every day. He also persuaded me to set the alarm for EARLY - 5:45 AM! EVEN ON THE WEEKENDS!!
I did it at first out of love and to humor him. But I admit, I was crying on the inside that whole first week of our new schedule!
But then something weird happened.... I stopped feeling tired during the day. And then, after a little while, I started to cherish my early morning times. I had at least 30 minutes to relax before work - I could linger in the shower, sip my tea, read a book, watch the news.... In fact I liked my early morning routine so much that when summer vacation rolled around, we only adjusted our schedule by a little bit - up at 7:30 or so instead of during the five o'clock hour.
And now since living in Texas (for the past 3 years or so), this is what my usual morning routine consists of:
- Waking up at 5:15 (yeah, we're in bed pretty early - between 8 and 9)
- Working out/stretching in front of the news for 20 minutes
- Jogging with the dog
- Showering/dressing
- Eating breakfast
By the time I'm ready for breakfast, I have thirty or forty minutes to catch up on blog and shop stuff before work!
I know this is all going to change once the baby comes - we're going to have to figure out a whole new morning routine. But for now this is working for us!
What about you? Are you a crazy early-morning person like me?
I loved the idea of setting an alarm during weekends, will have to try. I think all teachers get used to waking up early- I usually can't sleep past 8 (although I love a Sunday afternoon nap). Good luck with the baby routine. I hear it's quite impossible to work around the clock, you have to work around the feeding times!
ReplyDeleteI get up around 6:30 during the weeks, and I actually love it. My schedule has totally changed over the last few months, but I'm really loving it!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great morning schedule. Over the years, I've become a morning person. I wake up a bit later now that I work from home, but it's still early. Too bad I can't get the boyfriend on a good sleep schedule.

We get up at 5:30 during the week...in bed between 9:00-9:30 at night. On the weekends we do sleep in a little, but usually only til about 7:30 or 8:00. I like mornings, it's quiet before the kids and dogs get up and I like having time for coffee and breakfast and some blogs before work! :-)
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely not a morning person but I want to be so badly! On the days I do get up extra early I feel so much better about the day.. once I stop grumbling and my eyes stop burning. ;) But hey, if changing routines could work for you, maybe it could work for me! I'm definitely willing to try.
ReplyDeleteI have always been a morning person...but when my first son came along he was a better morning person. He woke up at 4:30. Forever like the first two years. Now I can't get him out of bed come the weekends. Lol. I'm still up at 5. :)
ReplyDeleteHope your havin a great time in California.
Summer turns me into a morning person. I love to get up and bake while it's still cool. But Winter? I am in the cocoon of my blankets until the last possible moment.
ReplyDeletei am more of a morning person too but not an early morning person. and definitely not an evening person at all i am falling asleep by 9:30pm, i am such an old person at 28
ReplyDeleteI am a morning person. I usually wake up around 6:00. It's so nice. I live with my sister who would sleep all day if she could and my dad who gets up around 7:30 everyday, so waking up with that extra time before everyone is awake allows me to have a cup of coffee and relax before the craziness of the day begins.
ReplyDeleteWell this is GREAT because my day started at 5:30 am today thanks to little miss Sophia and you are already prepared for that part of motherhood! :) I love being up in the mornings early...sometimes it takes discipline for me to stick to the bedtime though. It's 10:02 pm...time for bed. Good night!
ReplyDeletePS How wonderful when our husbands teach us such helpful things!
