New Mamma Reading

I know there's LOTS to learn about becoming a mom for the first time, but I'm a little lost about where to start. (There's just so much out there!)

So far, this is the only book I've read in depth - and while somewhat informative, it was definitely HILARIOUS and worth the read:

The authors/bloggers have a website here and a book trailer here!

But on a more serious note, are there any books that you would recommend for me? Books about labor/delivery? Breastfeeding? Baby care?

Please share! I'd love your suggestions!

  1. Hahah that looks really cute! I'm sorry I don't have any books to recommend. I know Target used to have a small maternity selection. I don't know if that would help!

  2. The best book I read was Natural Childbirth the Bradley way. It explains what's going on with your body, your baby and gives you exercises to practice for labor. I've also read parts of The Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears because you will need to decide whether or not to vaccinate your child/when, etc. I also read a lot of stories/articles on mothering.com. Good stuff on there. I hope that helps! :)

  4. Although it was a million years ago and super cliche I loved what to expect when your expecting.
I've heard that baby wise is really good for getting your baby on a schedule once he/she is here.
    Good Luck!

  5. I have to agree with Kelly as a first time mommy some years ago What to Expect When Expecting was soo informative, but I also liked The Girlfriends' Guide To Pregnancy these gals give you the skinny on the stuff people usually don't wanna tell ya, but want to... ; ) Hope this helps.

  7. Lol...I haven't seen or read that one. I'm sure it was probably funny. It's been so long since I've read a pregnancy book. I forget the exact title but it was one that was a "week by week", so you knew what was forming at that time and kind of what to expect...complete with pictures. I remember really liking it.

Reading is good to a point but over reading can boggle your brain a bit...just enjoy the process!! :-)

  9. I don't know what type of parenting style you lean towards and am always hesitant to recommend books because I felt very cheated and angry towards some of the books that I was told to read by my friends. If you do read any, keep an open mind and be willing to go with your gut. I didn't trust my instincts and it made the first few weeks really hard. That being said, some good "neutral" books are The Nursing Mother's Companion (very easy & informative read about breastfeeding) and Your Pregnancy Week by Week and Your Baby's First Year Week by Week. I admit the What to Expect books made me CRAZY with all the fear. I had to put it away.

  10. I know I already tweeted this, but in case you lost track of it, the best book I've come across is Pregnancy, Childbirth & the Newborn by Penny Simkin & a few others. I was given this book during my 3rd pregnancy and was floored by how much I didn't know the first two times around. This book is like an encyclopedia yet very readable. It's been written & edited by midwives, doulas, not sure who else.

Where this book differs from the well known What To Expect series is that it's based in fact without all the fear that WTE throws at you (i.e. the whole baby panic thing). It explains all the tests, drugs, birth options, etc. Definitely read the reader & publisher reviews, I agree with them!
