Bookworm

When I was younger, my dad used to say that if I need three things to survive: food, water, and a library. It's true. I love to read! The smell of a book's pages is like some sort of drug to me.... a healthy addiction, to be sure.

Unfortunately, when I pick up a book I get engrossed to the detriment of everything else. Housework? Ignored. Going to work to teach? An irritating distraction. Eating? Later. Because of this, I try to save my reading for the summer months when I have far fewer responsibilities.

Over spring break, I read Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant and enjoyed it thoroughly. And now, I'm on the hunt for summer reading recommendations!

Got any? Please share!

Also, have you ever heard of the Librarything Suggester? You type in a title of a book you recently enjoyed (or hated if you're using the "unsuggester" feature) and a list of books is generated that you also might like. It's kinda fun to play with!

  1. I looove to read too! During the school year I mostly read juvenile fiction (which I still opt to read sometimes) to my students or while we had independent reading time together. I read to be an example to my students, right?! Ha. It was so hard for me to end reading time most days. Now that I'm hope I do neglect things when I really get into a book, so I too refrain. I hope that you get to read tons of amazing books this summer! A favorite of mine are the books about Josephine Bonaparte by Sandra Gulland. Have you read them? I think the first is called The Many Lives and Secret Sorrows of Josephine B. Check them out! I wish I owned them.

  2. I haven't read it yet but it's on my summer reading list...just picked it up:
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society: A Novel
I read a review on it and it caught my interest. Right now I'm reading:
The King's Grace by Anne Easter Smith...I've read the other 2 in the series already and they were outstanding, this one is good but taking me a little longer to get through.

Let me know if you find any great summer reads!!

  4. I'm definitely like you! I could amuse myself for hours as a kid if I had a good book. I agree with Meeling - I finished The Guernsey book recently, and it was so sweet! And I love historical fiction - so once again, Anne Easter Smith is awesome. I've read many of her books. Alison Weir is also good. I just recently started The Postmistress by Sarah Blake, and it's good so far as well!

  5. I LOVE to read and have recently forced myself to read more by joining a book club. Unfortunately, I let all my other responsibilities in life keep me away from my love of reading but I'm happy to say I'm back in the game and loving it. Recently, I finished reading ShopGirl (by Steve Martin) and absolutely LOVED it; Never Let Me Go (by Kazuo Ishiguro) which was different but an interesting story and I just finished reading Bossypants (by Tina Fey). This last book was absolutely hilarious and I loved every minute of it. I was so sad when it ended but it's a great read and refreshing when you've read some serious books. Currently, I am reading Mildred Pierce by James M. Cain. After I watched the HBO mini-series a couple months ago, I have been obsessed with this story and recommend you look into it, too! Happy Reading!

  6. It's the BEST to get lost in a book. I am finishing up the Hunger Games trilogy (young adult, but a fun read for sure). I also love historical fiction - just read Sarah's Key and loved it. I also love A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and My Antonia.

  8. Nothing smells better than a library and old books! I haven't been able to pick up a book in awhile because of the kids...I get so engrossed in them I'd forget I had kids!

  10. SWOON. I heart how books smell. And I read year round, completely OK with everything that gets ignored in the process :) (Nothing THAT bad, no worries!) And I adore that image you found. So so lovely

So, summer reads ... That's a hard one, it so depends on your taste!! Some of my fav books of all time that are quicker reads (isn't that what a "summer read" is? a quick read?) =

    1) A Separate Peace (Was I the only hs'er to NOT read this in high school? I read this on my own and LOVED it.)

    2) The Golden Compass (The entire series was great, but that first book is really something special.)

    3) The Worst Thing I've Done (I like when main characters have flaws aside from typical chick lit flaws. This is much more raw that a traditional chick lit.)

    4) The Best of Everything (Click lit from the 1950s. So so so amazing to look at how women in the work place have changed ... and haven't. If you read this, be sure to watch the movie after and laugh your butt off.)

    Enjoy!!

  12. I'm such a bookworm too! It was a good thing that when my husband and I bought this place, it had built in shelves EVERYWHERE! We totally filled them with books. I'm reading a bunch of non-fiction now since I have an easier time putting it down. ;-) Fiction I will read and lose track of time (you understand!). The last fiction I read was "HungerGames" and was really good. I love Christian Historical Fiction - ie, anything written by Lori Wick, Francine Rivers, Elizabeth Musser (I like these based their historical fiction based in Atlanta!)...It's hard to know what to suggest because I don't know what you've read in the first place! Ha!
